On Sunday 8th November 2009 the Glentoran Legends will be playing in a special charity game at Shorts FC.
The game between the Legends and the 8th Old Boys is being staged to fundraise in honour of a former 8th Old Boy, Warren Ferguson who sadly passed away earlier in the year after being affected by Motor Neurone Disease, whilst still in his early 40s.
Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones.
Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing.
Glentoran fan and 8th Old Boy member, Ray Cordiner (pictured) had taken part in the recent GCT organised game between Glentoran fans and the Glentoran Legends and approached the Legends about the possibility of playing a game against the 8th in aid of the MND charity and also to help create awareness of the disease.
To a man, the Legends agreed to the game and the result of that is the match taking place at Shorts on the 8th November.
“I am delighted that the Glentoran Legends have kindly agreed to our invitation and we look forward to welcoming them to Shorts on the 8th of November. Obviously we hope to raise a lot on money on the day, so we will be charging a nominal fee for anyone that wants to attend on the day. I know that the Legends have donated some signed items for auction and balloting on the day, so hopefully we will get a great turnout to help us support the charity. Warren was former member of the fire service and was a terrific character who just loved his football.
This match will be a fitting tribute to him and also help us create awareness of MND.”said Ray.
Speaking on behalf of the Glentoran Legends, Rab McCreery echoed those views. “We always look forward to getting together for a game but this match will be special for us all as it is for such a worthy cause. I would hope that we will have a good squad available on the day and help make quite a few pounds for the charity.”
The match will kick – off at 2pm and should be a good afternoon’s entertainment.
